What is Tinnitus and What Causes It?

Tinnitus is one of the most common ear problems. Even though it is a common condition, very little is known about tinnitus. Other than that, it can be hard to live with. It can present with various symptoms, which can make it hard to tell if you're suffering from Tinnitus.

At London Hearing Specialists, we offer tinnitus assessments. These assessments help determine the nature of the condition and whether it is treatable. In cases where tinnitus is not entirely treatable, we can provide you with guidelines on how to make the condition more bearable.

What is Tinnitus and What Causes It?

Tinnitus is simply described as the perception of sound in the absence of external noise. It mainly manifests as a ringing or buzzing sound and affects a significant number of people globally.

The condition can manifest in various forms, including pulsatile tinnitus, tonal tinnitus, and musical tinnitus.

There are various triggers that can cause tinnitus, including some foods, medication and alcohol, but the condition has also been known just to present itself with no triggers.

Although tinnitus can affect anyone, some groups are more prone to the condition than others. Some of the factors that can make you more likely to get tinnitus include:

  • Age - Tinnitus is more prevalent with age. It has been found to affect older adults more than younger people. The older you get, the higher your chances of getting the condition.
  • Hearing Impairment - Tinnitus commonly accompanies hearing loss, more so in cases of age-related or noise-induced hearing problems.
  • Noise Exposure – People exposed to loud noise are more predisposed to suffering from tinnitus.
  • Health Conditions – Some medical conditions like neurological disorders and cardiovascular issues can trigger tinnitus.
  • Psychological Impact: Stress, anxiety, and depression can worsen tinnitus symptoms.

The impact of tinnitus varies considerably. Some patients experience minimal impact, whereas others can experience a significant reduction in their quality of life and well-being.

The most common symptom of tinnitus is a ringing or buzzing sound in your ears. Other symptoms include hissing or whistling, clicking or pulsing or pitch and volume variation.

Types of Tinnitus Tests

If you experience any of the above symptoms, you should get a tinnitus test just to be sure. A tinnitus test can help prevent hearing problems and, if the underlying cause of tinnitus can be determined, possibly treat the condition.

Types of Tinnitus Tests

Because tinnitus can present in various forms, we also have different types of tinnitus to ensure we investigate every possible channel and ensure the best possible outcome.

Audiometry Testing

Audiometry testing is a comprehensive hearing test that assesses your overall hearing health. During the test, you will use headphones and listen to a series of tones at various frequencies. The results generated from this test will help audiologists identify any hearing loss you may have which can contribute to tinnitus.

Tympanometry

Tympanometry evaluates the movement of the eardrum in response to air pressure changes. It helps diagnose conditions like eustachian tube dysfunction, which can worsen tinnitus.

Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) Test

This test measures the emissions that the cochlea produces when stimulated by sound. The OAE tests assess the inner ear's response to sound. These tests can help identify damage to the hair cells in the cochlea.

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)

These tests assess the auditory nerve and brainstem's ability to process sounds. Although they are not typically used to diagnose tinnitus, they can help identify potential neurological issues that may contribute to hearing problems and tinnitus.

The tests our audiologist recommends will vary depending on the initial consultation and what they think could be causing tinnitus based on the information you provide.

Wholeheartedly recommend. I booked a next day appointment with Asif at the Marylebone clinic (it uses space within a pharmacy) to get both ears cleaned after losing hearing in one of them. The process was quick, pain free, but most importantly, effective. I could hear straight away. I left things slightly late (3 weeks after losing hearing) so the ear was a bit red and tender- if you have hearing loss and no throbbing pain, it’s most likely a blocked ear and not an infection, in any case, get it checked out right away and don’t wait like I did! All is good now and a big thank you for getting my hearing back!

Why Should You Get Tested for Tinnitus?

Identifying Hearing Loss

Tinnitus is often a symptom of an underlying cause that could develop into hearing loss and other ear-related problems. It is also worth mentioning that many tinnitus patients also have some form of hearing loss. Additionally, such patients also use hearing aids, which can alleviate both tinnitus and hearing difficulties.

Determining Cause

Another reason to get tinnitus testing is that it can help identify the cause of tinnitus. Tinnitus can result from easy-to-diagnose and treat causes such as earwax blockages. The tests can also unearth other underlying causes, such as age-related hearing loss or exposure to loud noises. This determination can allow for targeted treatment.

Personalising Treatment

Tinnitus tests can also provide valuable information to the audiologist in developing a tailored treatment plan. The results will determine whether you need hearing aids, sound therapy, or medication. Providing a precise diagnosis will enhance the effectiveness of the interventions.

Monitoring Progress

Tinnitus tests can also be conducted to monitor the effectiveness of current interventions. The tests can help measure improvements and guide adjustments as needed.

What to Expect During Your Tinnitus Test

Your experience and what to expect during your tinnitus test will vary depending on the types of tests the audiologist determines you need.

However, the process always starts with collecting your medical history. The audiologist will ask you various questions, and you should answer them to the best of your ability. You may be required to provide information on any medication you've had recently because some medications can trigger tinnitus or make it work.

After collecting your history, the examination will start. Our audiologists will take time to tell you the tests they will conduct and then proceed to explain in detail what to expect during the test and ensure you understand every step. This is crucial in helping you prepare mentally and reducing anxiety.
