What is Tinnitus?

Ringing in your ears

Tinnitus is best described by those who suffer with it, as a ringing, humming, whooshing, or buzzing sounds coming from within your ear. You may have experienced this briefly when leaving an environment with high levels of noise, such as a concert or nightclub. Often this will go away on its own within a day or two. However, for those who experience this long-term, your daily life can become disrupted.

The sounds people with tinnitus experience can range. For some people this sounds will seem like a quiet background noise, for others this can be a much more disturbing loud noise. Reports from those who have experienced living with tinnitus, say this sound is often worse when there is no other noise around you. Usually affecting their sleep pattern since the sound becomes much more apparent in quiet rooms with little background noise.

Tinnitus can affect people of any age and is more common than you may think. With around 10% to 20% of adults experiencing this within their lifetime.

What to expect at your Tinnitus consultation

Our tinnitus treatment is tailored to suit each patient's needs. At your first consultation, we will do a thorough assessment of your ears to look for treatable causes of tinnitus such as ear wax build-up or ear infections. Even if a specific cause cannot be found, there are still a number of different treatments that we can discuss to help you manage your symptoms. During your appointment, our Audiologist will be able to explain these options in detail, recommending the best course of action. At the end of your appointment, we will talk you through ways to manage your tinnitus at home, as well as answering any questions you may have.

Free follow up appointment

If it is not possible to clear the ear completely at the first sitting, then you can come back to us for free follow ups until the job is done.
